Florida Hospital Ocala opened its doors in 1898 as Marion General Hospital and has been in continuous operation since then. Then in 1928, the hospital was renamed to Munroe Memorial Hospital. Adventist Health System acquired Munroe Regional Medical and renamed it Florida Hospital Ocala in 2018. GENERAL SUMMARY :

The Histology Supervisor oversees Histology functions in accordance with the Division of Clinical Laboratory Standards and pursuant to Florida Department of Professional Regulation, Chapter 64B3-13.002. Oversees the day-to-day operations and competencies of staff in the Histology Laboratory and Pathology Transcription. Ensures compliance of all regulatory requirements and quality measures. Oversees duties performed by Histology Technologists and ensures that Histology Technicians are directly supervised as required. Oversees functions and daily operations of Pathology Transcription.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Communicates with courtesy when interacting with internal and external customers, both in person and on the telephone.

  • Demonstrates respect for co-workers and develops positive working relationships with other departments.

  • Oversees or participates in action plans required for any laboratory service related performance improvement initiatives.

  • AIDET techniques are used as a part of daily culture.

  • Demonstrates FHT commitment standards and values.

  • Adheres to FHT standards for dress and professional appearance.

  • Demonstrates collaboration and teamwork in managing departmental workflow, following all department and hospital policies and procedures.

  • Participates in peer interviewing process and peer review processes as requested.

  • Promotes a positive work environment to improve employee satisfaction and reduce turnover.

  • Assists other leadership staff in maintaining appropriate training and corrective action for staff not complying with policy/procedure or poor work performance.

  • Ensures departmental staffing schedule provides adequate coverage.

  • Meets or exceeds productivity targets. Reviews and manages the PMR daily.

  • Controls salary and non-salary expenses at or below target.

  • Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, cost and impact for departmental practice in the delivery of laboratory services.

  • Ensures good time management, casual overtime is avoided and hospital policy regarding to break and lunch periods are followed.

  • Ensures departmental supply levels are maintained in efforts to reduce waste and also avoid expenses associated with “rush” or special orders.

  • Ensures all departmental regulatory standards are maintained at all times.

  • Ensures departmental workload is performed in a timely efficient manner.

  • Ensures departmental functions are performed in a quality manner reducing / eliminating problems.

  • Maintains competencies in all assigned procedures, departments and hospitals, including timely completion of assigned competency assessments.

  • Completes all policy or procedure review assignments in a timely manner.

  • Effectively troubleshoots software and instrument problems needed to correct issues and / or reports them up to the leadership team.

  • Demonstrates commitment to professional and personal growth – i.e. completes all mandatory educational requirements, maintains departmental competencies, completes all assigned policy and procedure reviews, 100 % review of assigned departmental meeting minutes and information, and acts as a preceptor as needed.

  • Ensures departmental competency assessments are assigned and completed according to regulatory requirements.

  • Ensures new testing procedures are implemented as needed.

  • Trains and mentors middle and high performers in efforts to expand the lab leadership workforce.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED :

  • Excellent computer and keyboarding skills.

  • Ability and willingness to work independently.

  • Ability to work and willingness to work a flexible hours.

  • Ability and willingness recommend changes and assist in making changes successful for operations.

  • Excellent knowledge of laboratory rules and regulations including: CAP, CLIA, State of Florida.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Ability to multitask

  • Excellent leadership and mentorship skills.

  • Excellent leadership skills promoting a teamwork environment. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED :

  • Associate Degree

Science degree meeting state licensure requirements (64B3-5.002).

  • 5 years’ experience required at a Histology Technologist level

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

  • 2 years’ experience in a leadership position

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED :

  • State of Florida- Histology Technologist (HLT)– Supervisory License
