Outreach Technician is responsible for processing & prioritizing large volumes of blood, body fluids, tissues and other substances for laboratory testing received from physician clinics as well as outpatient samples. Requires knowledge of diagnosis codes, Insurance requirements for testing, Medicare Medical Necessity requirements and a complete understanding of LMRP software. Requires knowledge of Athena the electronic medical record for the physician offices. They must be able to answer questions and trouble shoot problems for physician’s offices, nursing homes and other hospital departments. They may help in preparing specimens and batches for send-outs to other laboratories. Customer service skills continuously exercised. He/She is required to perform multiple clerical tasks related to specimen collection & processing requiring meticulous attention to detail.


  1. Leads receiving, processing, and labeling activities for laboratory specimens.

  2. Supports leadership with daily workflow, billing and problem resolution.

  3. Register specimens from nursing homes, home health agencies, and physician offices.

  4. Check for Medical Necessity compliance.

  5. Order tests.

  6. Answer questions regarding test ordering, specimen preparation, etc.

  7. Resolve problems.

  8. Assist in emptying tube system and logging in specimens.

  9. Accurately collect Chain of Custody specimens per procedure.

  10. Prepare specimens as required by each department

  11. Match labels and tubes

  12. Rack prepared specimens for each department.

  13. Reprint labels when necessary

  14. Prepare specimens to be sent to other laboratories including batch generation and bagging of specimens.

  15. Communicate with the approved reference labs for testing, ordering supplies, obtaining results, and problem resolutions.

  16. Follow up with physician’s offices when tests ordered does not meet Medical Necessity. Get these in a timely manner.

  17. Scan or insure orders from physician’s office are scanned into the chart.

  18. Assists with billing error resolution for patient financial services.

  19. Assists with department orientation and trains laboratory support staff.

  20. Assists with the receipt and inspection of materials and orders/stocks materials and equipment. Manages supply inventories and ensures supplies are viable prior to use for patient collection.

  21. Participates and assists in laboratory techniques and methods, as directed.

  22. Collects appropriate specimens from patients as needed.

  23. Perform other duties as assigned or as needed.



· Up-to-date knowledge of laboratory tests and laboratory ordering processes.

· Ability to process laboratory specimens with appropriate use of hospital and laboratory information systems.

· Ability to evaluate collected specimens for volume, collection containers, and related measures.

· Ability to accession specimens, evaluate samples for proper submission, document issues.

· 1 year of approved clinical laboratory experience

· Computers, telephone, fax, copier, printers, monitored refrigerators & freezers, and centrifuges.

· Working knowledge of hospital owned physician clinics regarding workflows in Athena and ability to help troubleshoot.


· High School diploma or equivalency diploma

· 1 year of approved clinical laboratory experience.

· 1 year of physician clinic experience.




· Phlebotomy certification
